Garden With Nature in Mind

Middlebrook Gardens is an award winning design/build firm specializing in California native gardening and sustainable landscaping. Located in San Jose, California, Middlebrook Gardens is a leading voice in the rising native gardening and sustainability movement.

Originally founded as Middlebrook Interior Landscape Inc. in 1976 by Alrie

Middlebrook, the firm grew to become one of the leading indoor landscaping companies, winning more national and international awards than any other California-based indoor landscaping company.

As environmental awareness has increased in recent decades, Middlebrook has evolved to embrace ecologically sustainable methods through native gardening. In 1995 Middlebrook Gardens was created to specialize in gardens that reflect the natural beauty of California, conserve precious natural resources and link the urban landscape closer to nature.

In 2004, Middlebrook Gardens launched www.LoseTheLawn.com, a statewide marketing and public outreach campaign directed toward suburban, urban and rural homeowners. Public education and awareness is an integral part of the Middlebrook Gardens mission.

The success of the firm has resulted from the personal mission and beliefs of its dynamic owner and president, Alrie Middlebrook. Middlebrook is recognized as a leader in California native gardening, and is a committed advocate and practitioner of ecology-based landscaping. Middlebrook Gardens has designed and built over 200 California native gardens. She co-authored the groundbreaking new book "Designing California Native Gardens; The Plant Community Approach to Artful, Ecological Gardens."

"As a designer, I am inspired by nature and re-interpreting it in the garden setting," said Alrie Middlebrook. "It is the collaboration of science and art that creates a garden that is, firstly, beautiful, culturally rich and ecologically sustainable."
